Future at Work

Passion for design has driven our success at Morgan and so we understand that educating and inspiring bright, young design talent is vital for the future of our industry. FIRA is celebrating 65 years since their inception and we’re pleased to say that this year we’re supporting their first student design competition FUTURE@WORK.

Open to all undergraduate students studying furniture, design or architecture related courses in a UK university, the competition brief outlined that design concepts should fall into one of three categories; personal space, small group space or novel product design. Sustainability in its broadest sense, the impact of technology and social criteria had to be considered but the brief was deliberately imprecise to encourage innovation and creativity.

An ever expanding whirlwind of technological development is constantly re-shaping the world of work. Today’s students are members of the aptly named ‘Generation Y’ – a generation who have never known a world without digital connectivity and who blur boundaries by questioning older, hierarchal and conventional ways of working.

They will be instrumental in changing the culture and landscape of the future at work and the quality of their education is vitally important. We asked them to use their imagination and foresight to show us their vision of how workspaces will look in 25 years time.

Our panel of expert judges are:
Ross Hunter – Graven
Mick Jordan – MIX Interiors
Katerina Mc Mahon – Morgan
Stephen Perkins – Herman Miller
Pete Beele – FIRA

The winner of first prize will receive £3,000; second prize will be £1,000 and third prize £500.

We’ll be exhibiting the shortlisted entries at throughout CDW 2015 and there’ll be an opportunity for visitors to vote for their favourite either at the showroom or online. The winner of the public vote will receive £500.

Come along to our showroom breakfast event on Tuesday 19th May 2015, 10am to 11:30am and meet the students. FIRA’s Chief Ergonomist, Levent Çaglar, will give a short presentation which takes a look at how offices have changed over the years and what we could see in the future.

The winners will be announced in early June and an official presentation will take place at FIRA’s annual House of Lords event  on 11th September 2015.

Here at Morgan we strive for excellence and our achievements are directly related to the creativity, knowledge and enthusiasm of our design team. We’re proud to be part of a flourishing design-led industry that enhances the lives of so many both at work and play. We believe that supporting FIRA, and the design industry’s future workforce, will help ensure it stays that way.

FIRA provides invaluable technical support to the entire furniture supply chain and funds projects for the benefit of the industry.
