Sit down for stand-up!

“Knock Knock!”, “Who’s there?”
“Aristophanes?”, “Aristophanes who? …”

Who knew that stand-up comedy could be traced back to Ancient Greece!? Aristophanes, the most famous writer of ‘old comedy’, created critical, parody plays. Menander, the most famous writer of ‘new comedy’, wrote over one hundred imaginative, literary comedies. Together, they created the foundation for comedy worldwide.

British stand-up comedy began in music halls in the 18th and 19th centuries, as did Max Millers career. Who soon became one of the greatest British stand-up comedians of his time, nicknamed ‘The Cheeky Chappie’. During the 20th century, the music halls suffered as television and radio comedy grew and became more widely accessible. This greater exposure to a wider audience put pressure on comedians, as the demand for new material increased.

The 50’s & 60’s saw a surge of British comedians from the Oxford and Cambridge University revues, including the Beyond the Fringe quartet (Peter Cook, Dudley Moore, Alan Bennett and Jonathan Miller) and the Monty Python troupe. Peter Rosengard set up the Comedy Store London and opened its doors in 1979. Since, the establishment has allowed many comedians to begin and establish their careers. Including Dawn French, Michael McIntyre and Paul Merton.

Next Wednesday the 24th of February, we will be hosting our very own comedy night, featuring Mark Simmons, Funmbi Omotayo and our headlining act, Ivo Graham.

Ivo Graham, began his stand-up career in 2009 and within a few months won the ‘So You Think You’re Funny’ award for new acts at the Edinburgh Fringe. Since, he has received a number of award nominations, performed internationally, appeared on BBC3 Edinburgh Comedy Fest Live, BBC Radio 4 and XFM, and had a number of sell out solo hours at the Edinburgh Fringe and Londons Soho Theatre, receiving a collection of four and five star reviews. For more on Ivo, check out his website.

Please join us at our showroom, on Wednesday 24th February at 1 Dallington Street, Clerkenwell for an evening of stand up comedy. Doors open at 6pm, last entry before performance is at 6:45pm. If you wish to attend, please email showroom@morganfurniture.co.uk.
