Renew; a reupholstery journey

Currently on display at our Clerkenwell showroom is our immersive exhibition, ‘Renew’ demonstrating the sustainable approach taken within our reupholstery process at our Hampshire Factory.

Morgan products are made to last, with longevity considered at every stage of the design and manufacturing process. With sustainability often being the main motivation to refresh rather than replace, our reupholstery programme offers our customers the opportunity to renew their Morgan products years, even decades, after they were first delivered, when general wear and tear has taken its toll on the surface, but underneath the chair is still going strong.

‘Renew’ follows the journey of four of our Pastille dining chairs on their way through the reupholstery process, to the point of delivery back to our customer, AELTC, Wimbledon.

The chairs arrive back at our Hampshire factory ready for our Despatch team to assess. Each chair has a unique story and is inspected individually to ensure that any issues are quickly identified and resolved before reupholstery begins. We also offer a repair and refinishing service for any damaged showwood frames.

The journey then continues through to upholstery where our skilled workers carefully remove the old fabric cover ensuring the showwood frame is protected and as much of the underlying foam and webbing is retained.

We specify CMHR reflex foam; a high-quality technical foam that ensures maximum durability over the product’s lifetime. The original foam is steamed from the frame and replaced with a new foam kit to ensure the ergonomics of the reupholstered chair are revived to our high standard. The waste is then collected for recycling and turned into reconstituted chip foam.

We offer our customers complete flexibility when specifying fabric. As a result, our cutting team are experts at working with a huge variety of fabric types; selecting and modifying templates to ensure the perfect fit whilst arranging them to maximise efficiency and reduce waste. Any remaining and unwanted fabric off-cuts and roll ends are then donated to a local charity.

Our sewing team then carefully selects the thread colour to match the chosen fabric. Each Morgan product has a unique sewing specification, combining a single or double top stitch to either smooth or emphasise the seamline according to the product’s aesthetic and material selection. For the final touch, we then add the Morgan branded label.

Reaching its final stage of upholstery, the covers are fitted and secured and the fabric tension, seam placement and border heights are then double-checked to ensure a consistent finish. Our quality control team then performs a detailed quality check, before adding new foot glides and wrapping each chair using recyclable materials for protection in transit. The chairs are now renewed and ready to be delivered back to the Player’s Lounge, AELTC, Wimbledon renewed and ready for many more Championships to come.
