For our teams, inspiration can come from many places, but nature has always been one of our richest sources – from manufacturing resource to sustainable design, it has provided the seeds from which our conscientious craftsmanship has blossomed.
This week, we’re exploring the story behind Kaya, our best-selling collection. We start not on home soil, as most of our manufacturing narratives do, but rather in Africa, in the sacred forests spread across the Kenyan coast. Not only did this precious pocket of nature lend our collection its name, the strength of its sacred trees served as an inspiration for its design, which offers a quietly confident curvature and a more organic profile. The result is a trio of cocooning seats and inviting, understated luxury.
And while the quiet robustness of trees offers a source of wonder and inspiration for our design process, it is their leaves and the delicate dappling of sunlight through them (a concept the Japanese call komorebi) that informs the essence of its construction. A sturdy, elegant slatted back allows light and space to flow through Kaya, inviting it to not only elevate where it is positioned, but also to interact with a room’s negative space.
Loose cushions in place of a solid upholstered back allow fabrics to be updated and repaired without complete dismantling by our teams. This opens numerous aesthetical possibilities for our clients, providing opportunities for them to refresh concepts and looks, as well as providing us with the opportunity to extend every piece’s lifecycle. Style, substance and sustainability come together to elevate our best seller beyond its design credentials.

With this spirit, the Kaya collection offers our clients three sizes to suit every project and every space. For rooms with more reduced footprints, corners in need of a delicate accent chair, our smallest version delivers understated luxury without compromise. The middle-sized Kaya offers more flexible uses, looking elegantly at home in luxurious waiting lounges, meeting rooms or even dining spaces – its curved frame inviting a relaxed, enveloping mood. Our largest piece delivers a wider, more cocooning chair, perfectly poised as a statement piece, balancing light, structure and comfort beautifully.
